How DSL works and how to fix problems

Slow internet can be very frustrating. To figure out what's causing the slow down, give the steps below a try. It will make it easier to find the cause.

a. Connect a computer to the modem with an Ethernet cable.
b. Disconnect and/or power down any device that connects to the internet like:

  • Computers [laptops, desktops, servers]
  • Gaming systems [ps3, xbox, wii]
  • TV's with the ability stream video/music [Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, Pandora]
  • Devices that stream video [Roku, Apple TV, Google Chromecast]
  • Devices that stream music [Sonos, Bose, Logitech]
  • DVRs [TiVo, Hopper, Sling, Genie]
  • Mobile devices [smart phones, Android, iPhone, iPad]
  • Web enabled surveillance cameras [Swann, Q-see, Netgear, Lorex, x10]
  • Web enabled security systems/home automation [Smarthome]
  • Other routers, switches, VoIP phones, wireless printers
Some of these devices may be running updates, syncing files or performing other tasks in the background that eat up your speed.
